I am writing this as twilight falls over my city and the stars get ready to make their entrance. 4/4/2023 was a remarkable day, a first of many firsts. I think it is safe to say many of us are smiling right now.

And you know what often goes through one’s head at times such as this? A melody perhaps of times gone by, a whisper of a song – of a lyric — that sums up the day perfectly. In my case, what fills my mind is the emotional word “Hallelujah.”

Hallelujah is a haunting song. Written by Leonard Cohen, there have been many iterations of this melody through the years, my favorite being Jeff Buckley’s.

But the words are both bitter and sweet when you listen. And today most definitely was a day of of both bitter and sweet.

It was bitter because this should never have happened. Trump should never have been president at all. We should have had more people who spoke up against him on the Republican side. Had we had that, I am confident t January 6 would not have happened.

Had Republicans voted for his impeachment, much would not have occurred, that did. We must live with that. But as you see, the folly of Trumpism is receding. And those who try to bring it back are not having much success.

We saw very few protests in New York. We saw the ratings of 60 minutes plummet for having an insurrectionist grace the screen. All over, we see that America wants — something different. That something is love. Hallelujah.

Forgive me, readers, if I am a bit teary-eyed as I write this. We all have different ways of dealing with our emotions. 4/4/2023 should always be remembered. It should be remembered not just as a day of Donald Trump’s incitement. It is also the day that love won. Hallelujah.
