When the news broke over the weekend that Michael Cohen would be testifying to the Manhattan grand jury, it seemingly pointed to the end of the case. Cohen, who has met with the DA’s office roughly twenty times, is the star witness. His testimony today points to Donald Trump’s indictment coming within just days. And now another key witness has entered the fray, possibly pointing to a broader set of criminal charges against Trump.
It turns out Michael Cohen and Jennifer Weisselberg testified to the grand jury today. Weisselberg told the Daily Beast today that the Manhattan criminal case against Trump appears to be broader than any one of his crimes. Specifically she’s saying that the case has been “up-leveled” from what it previously had been.
Here’s what’s interesting. The mere inclusion of Jennifer Weisselberg as a grand jury witness points to a broader case against Trump. We all know by now that Cohen is testifying about Trump’s hush money crimes in relation to Stormy Daniels. But Jennifer Weisselberg – ex daughter in law of Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg – has a different area of expertise. Her testimony would likely relate to illegally undeclared benefits and such.
For Cohen and Weisselberg to both be witnesses in this case, the charges would need to be broad enough to encompass both their areas of knowledge. This seems to rule out any scenario in which the Manhattan DA merely hits Trump with a single charge, or even multiple charges for the same specific crime. It now appears more likely that Trump will be indicted on charges that cover various crimes he’s committed.
More to the point, Cohen and Weisselberg appear to be the final two grand jury witnesses in this case. The only thing that could have delayed the indictment process at this point was the fact that the DA recently invited Trump to testify on his own behalf, but according to NBC News, Trump has now declined that offer.
The Daily Beast – which has clearly been talking to people associated with the DA’s office for its Weisselberg article – says that absent Trump testifying against himself, his grand jury indictment is expected to come within “just days.” Previously a source close to the DA’s office told a reporter that Trump should beware the “Ides of March” – which is this Wednesday.
